The summer holidays are here – bringing with them so many things to do with the little ones. Expand their imaginations and let them run wild with our pick of the best days out for the whole family.
Top Summer Family Days Out
Walk On The Wild Side
Take the kids for a day out at ZSL London Zoo, the world’s oldest scientific zoo, where they can get up close and personal with over 720 different species of animal. The new Land Of The Lions experience opened this spring, it’s five times bigger than the previous Lion enclosure. Overhead walkways let you get closer than ever to the mighty lions. With daily events and feeding times to see, no matter what your little one’s favourite animal is: you’ll find it here.
As well as London Zoo, there are wild days out to be had at safari parks and zoos across the UK. Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire is the UK’s largest Zoo, while Marwell Zoo in Winchester is one of Mumsnet’s top rated. Check out all of their zoo recommendations, reviewed by parents.
A Roarsome Day Out
The Eden Project, Cornwall, boasts the largest rainforest in captivity, housed in breathtaking, enormous Biomes. Activities, outdoor gardens, and play areas give the kids plenty to explore, including a Giant Bee and England’s longest zip wire (for the brave!)
Voted one of the UK’s best new attractions by The Independent in 2015, it has even more new additions this year, as dinosaurs have taken over in Dinosaur Uprising (23rd July until 4th Sept). They’re on the loose – so watch out! Kids will love the invasion of prehistoric creatures from land, sea and air. They can get involved in Dinosaur activities like the Dig Pit – where you chip away with pickaxes to reveal a massive dinosaur fossil.
Back To Nature
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is a green oasis perfect for getting back to nature and letting your little ones roam free. With an 18 meter high Treetop Walkway, Log Trails, Bee Garden, a human-sized Badger set, interactive botanical play zone, and Aquarium all on site, it’s a full day out.
Designed to work for pushchair access and well equipped for babies and toddlers (lots of high chairs), this makes for a stress free outing. Over the summer there are also special events for the kids, including live outdoor shows of Wind In The Willows and The Dream Fairies, throughout July and August.
Created for and by parents who want to have as much fun as their kids, Big Fish Little Fish are an events crew who host afternoon parties from 2pm to 4pm – each one a mini family-festival. Expect top named DJs, soft play for babies, craft areas, face painting, a bar, bubbles, giant balloons and glitter canons.
Each event is individual, with its own theme: from ‘Superheroes’ to ‘Ugly Bug Circus’. Time Out says – “Credible DJ bills… Great effects… Magical.” This summer you can find their events everywhere from Edinburgh to Bristol. Well worth checking out for some unique family fun.
Each year, more festivals are becoming family friendly, offering a fun packed day out with the kids. The Big Feastival (26th – 28th August, The Cotswolds) is top of our list, with loads of activities on offer.
Appearances from Cbeebies Justin Fletcher, Family Olympics, a Vintage Funfair and a Twirlywoos show have the kids covered. The best in live music, feasts, street food and bars have the adults sorted. Plus, kids under 12 go free. For more family-friendly festivals throughout the summer, check out The Guardians top festivals for babies, kids and parents.
West End Showstoppers
Kids Week takes over London’s West End this month, so kids can see top shows for free. There are shows for the under 5’s to the over 7’s – including The Tiger Who Came To Tea, The Gruffalo, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Matilda and Wicked. A great day out while saving mum and dad some summer holiday budget!
If your kids are a bit more adventurous, there are even a choice of additional free activities available with your ticket. Get behind the scenes of the shows- go to Q&As or dance workshops to keep your little performer entertained.
